The ultrasound allows us to look at internal organs in a way that is different to x-rays. It is a non-invasive and safe procedure. Often the patient does not need to be sedated or anaesthetised, but will need an area of skin clipped free of hair to enable the ultrasound to produce good images. Using an ultrasound can be a lot like looking at successive sections through an organ; in another words like looking through a loaf of bread one slice at a time. The ultrasound allows us to view the inside of the heart while it is working. As in human medicine, it is a valuable tool for diagnosing pregnancy.
